- LATE-BREAKING NEWS
- from the author of Qanalyst
- (As of September 18, 1990)
-
-
-
- NEW REGISTRATION OPTIONS
- You can now dial an 800 number to register Qanalyst. Call the
- Public (software) Library at 800-2424-PSL and say you want to buy
- a copy of Qanalyst. If you have questions or need some technical
- support, please call Barn Owl Software at 618-632-7345. We'll be
- glad to speak with you.
- You can use Visa or MasterCard whether you register through us
- or through PsL. PsL also takes American Express.
-
- Barn Owl Software now offers a CompuServe "IntroPak" with each
- registration. It waives the regular $40 signup fee and gives you
- a $15 credit on top of it. If you've already registered and want
- an IntroPak, call us at 618-632-7345. We'll set you right up.

- QMODEM V4.2 AND INTERNAL ZMODEM
- The debut of Qmodem v4.2 brings with it an internal Zmodem
- implementation. Qanalyst v2.05 handles it.
-
- John Friel and I are happy to report all Qmodem/Qanalyst log
- file control conflicts were resolved in Qmodem v4.1. You may run
- Qanalyst from the Qmodem DOS shell without fear. Many thanx go
- to John for developing a solution we could both live with. (As
- some of you may you, John & I had been working to resolve this
- for more than a year.)
-
-
- QMODEM V4.2 VARIABLE DATE/TIME FORMATS
- Qanalyst v2.05 cannot properly handle all instances of the Qmodem
- v4.2 date/time format capability. This normally doesn't affect
- Americans because 'mm/dd/yy' and 'hh:mm:ss' are their perennial
- favorites. If you change Qmodem's date/time formats, you need to
- do something so Qanalyst understands your log files:
-
- 1. Invoke Qanalyst with the new /Ddateform_timeform option so it
- knows what to do. Both the dateform and timeform strings
- must be exactly eight characters long if you wish to use this
- option. We repeat, your date and time format strings must
- each be exactly eight characters long!
- 2. Use the new QMLOGCVT program (included) to change your log
- files so Qanalyst can read them. Type "QMLOGCVT ?" for
- instructions on how to use the program.

-
- "CURRENT CALL" ANALYSIS
- Qanalyst v2.05 offers "current call" analysis. You can now
- learn the cost of a call even if you're still online with another
- computer. This works ONLY if you use the /BL command line
- option.
- You can actually get Qanalyst to "pop up" over Qmodem during
- the current call if you want to have a Qmodem-like window. You
- need to use the /BL command line, of course. Set your configura-
- tion file so you request a detailed report and no U/D report, and
- make sure you send the report to your screen (not to a file). Go
- to the Utility Options menu and set the "Always print a summary"
- option to No. Now, when you call on Qanalyst from within Qmodem,
- the program will "pop up" and give you the information in a nice,
- clean window. Enjoy!
- I encourage you to use the command-line option "/T:1" (see
- Qanalyst manual). This will considerably speed up the analysis
- process. And remember, small log files go faster than large
- ones.
-
- Qanalyst's "current call" analysis is not as powerful as it
- would be under the Call Data Standard. CDS is a way for communi-
- cations programs to interact with phone bill analyzers. Qmodem
- uses a proprietary, non-CDS methodology at this time. See below
- for news about the new Operator program under development.
-
-
- BUG REPORTS
- If you find any bugs in the program (major or minor), please
- leave a message on our support BBS at (618) 398-5703. Thanx!
-
-
- EXTERNAL PROTOCOLS
- Many Qanalyst users wonder why they can't get reports on files
- transferred with external protocols. The answer: Qmodem doesn't
- record what happens during an external protocol transfer. See
- appendix section D.2 of the manual for further details. For some
- good news, look below for information on how Qmodem will someday
- resolve this conflict.
-
-
- THE QANALYST.DOC FILE
- QANADOCS.COM has replaced QANALYST.DOC on distribution disks
- to make Qanalyst fit on a 360k floppy disk. QANADOCS.COM will
- create the QANALYST.DOC file when you type "QANADOCS" at the DOS
- prompt.
-
-
- MANUAL ERRATA
- Qanalyst manuals up to v2.03 claimed you might have major
- problems if you tried to use the program from a Qmodem DOS shell.
- This potential disaster was resolved as of the release of Qmodem
- v4.1 (see above).
-

-
-
-
-
-
- Version 2.05 has an expanded "current call" analysis function.
- See details above.
-
- Qanalyst manuals up to v2.03 claimed you would need at least
- 190k of memory. You now need just 155k. Please remember, this
- is a bare minimum! Qanalyst "grows" while it analyzes your phone
- bills, and it will terminate with an error message if it runs out
- of available memory.
-
- Barn Owl Software now offers a 30-day money back guarantee on
- Qanalyst, no questions asked. You must return all materials in
- good condition to receive a refund.
-
- We now test Qanalyst under both the COMMAND.COM and 4DOS.COM
- command processors. If you have problems running Qanalyst under
- 4DOS, give us a call.
-
- We know of no other errors needing to be mentioned here. If
- you find something wrong, please leave a message about it on our
- support BBS at (618) 398-5703. Thanx!
-
-
- QANALYST V1.0 USERS
- Please read the WHATSNEW.DOC file. Better yet, just print it
- out ── it's only two pages long.
-
-
- MAKE BIG PHONE-RATE FILES?
- No!!! Keep phone-rate records only for phone numbers which
- are an EXCEPTION to the defaults. The "Helpful Hints" section of
- the manual goes into detail about this. Create default area-code
- records whenever you can. If that won't do, then create default
- prefix records. If THAT won't do, then and only then should you
- create a record for a specific number.
- The Append-from-phone-log-files menu command should be used
- with caution. Consult the manual before you use it.
-
-
- THE INCLUDED FILES
- QANALYST.PRF is a "starter" phone-rate data file containing
- the 1990-91 AT&T holiday schedule and a default area-code record
- for toll free "800" numbers.
- The SAMPLE.* files let you try Qanalyst on the spot, even if
- you haven't started a log file of your own. Type "SAMPLE" at the
- DOS prompt, press the ENTER key, and have fun.
-
-
- "OPERATOR" COMING SOON
- I'm working on another program, "Operator", which is similar
- to Qanalyst. The big difference is it reads log files conforming
- to the powerful new Call Data Standard. CDS dictates standard
- methods for communications programs to keep a record of the calls
- they make.
-
-
-
-
- ── page 3 ──
-
-
-
-
-
- Operator will also include a powerful TSR voice call auto-
- dialer. It takes only 6k of memory (that's right, 6k!) due to
- complex swapping techniques and will be a godsend to Qmodem users
- who always wanted to dial voice calls with their modems and keep
- a log of their voice calls.
-
- John Friel is among the many who are committed to switching to
- CDS. Friel recently said "we expect to switch to CDS with the
- release of Qmodem 5.0." You can read more about this standard in
- the new book "Dr. File Finder's Guide To Shareware", published by
- Osborne/McGraw-Hill.
- If you think Qanalyst is a powerful program, just wait until
- you see Operator. You'll be impressed. Operator will debut at
- $49, but Qanalyst users who register before January 31, 1991 get
- a free Operator registration.
